Overview

The cybersecurity skills gap – a widely accepted premise that there is a massive shortage of cybersecurity professionals and expertise – has been a problem plaguing our industry for close to a decade. This gap impacts organizations of all sizes and maturity levels across the globe. This is why organizations continue to struggle to address their needs for 24/7 monitoring, early detection, proactive threat hunting, and rapid remediation of threats.

Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services have emerged in response to this market need. Gartner lays out the goals of MDR in their recent MDR Market Guide: “The goal of MDR services is to rapidly identify and limit the impact of security incidents to customers. These services are focused on remote 24/7 threat monitoring, detection and targeted response activities.” Gartner predicts that by 2024, 25% of organizations will be using MDR services, up from less than 5% in 2019. Additionally, Gartner predicts that by 2024, 40% of midsize enterprises will use MDR as their only managed security service.

Four questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you concerned that your team lacks the skills and experience needed to keep your organization protected 24/7?
  • What would happen if an attack occurred after hours? Would your team struggle to respond as fast enough to limit damage?
  • Is your team dealing with alert fatigue from their security tools?
  • Would you benefit from having a team of experts monitoring your entire environment including; endpoint, network, email, cloud and identity

Top reasons our community cites for adopting or considering this solution:

  • Lack 24/7 security coverage of your environment.
  • Lack the human resources (number of people, expertise, etc.) to confidently detect incidents and react to threats.
  • Alert fatigue – overload of alerts from your security tools (i.e., your EDR).
  • The unknown – fearing a new type of attack you are not prepared for.
  • Difficulty balancing financial investment with security return on investment.
