When companies migrate workloads to a cloud platform, their administrators need to plan, implement and monitor the replication of live server VMs — whether those VMs run on premises or in another cloud. And these challenges multiply when they have to migrate large volumes of VMs.

Many public cloud providers offer VM replication services to ease large-scale migrations from on-premises data centers to their platforms, including capabilities for automation, scheduling and reporting. AWS Server Migration Service (SMS) is an example of this. And while AWS SMS isn’t new, it has recently expanded to enable migrations between the two most popular public cloud environments — AWS and Microsoft Azure.
